It is sometimes said, "golf is a metaphor for life." The saying suggests that the challenges golfers
experience on the golf course teach us how to face parallel situations in everyday life.
Golf is a kind of sport, but it's something different. So I think golf is tao; a way for enlightenment.
For those of us drawn to the golf course year after year, golf becomes a kind of spiritual discipline,
a pathway that leads to transformation. I'd like to expand this view to include the notion that playing
golf is a way for a person to experience and appreciate the spiritual journey.
I used to say my golf is the spiritual journey. I'm not playing golf just for fun.
In 1998, my spiritual journey took another unexpected turn. I had to resign my position
as a researcher of a national research institute.
While I took several months off for rest and renewal, I was amazed to discover
that my soul was instinctively drawn to the green grass of the golf course.
I began practicing and playing on a regular basis as part of my recovery.
During that period, golf provided a safe, nurturing environment where my body,
mind and spirit could experience healing.
